new york city

After a few fun filled days in Westchester for work I was off to NYC on Sunday afternoon for a few days to relax between conferences. Sunday was St. Patrick's Day and all day long I wanted to be back in Cork and enjoying the day there with trad music and a pint of beamish. I had a wonderful St. Patrick's there in 2009 right before I left. I lived in Ireland for 2 years total - 19 months between 2007-2009 and then 4 months in 2005. But I was looking forward to going out with Suz and Meg this year!

So I took the train from Westchester and met Suz, Megan and other one of their friends Beth in midtown. They had been to a few other places before I met up with them, and the weirdest part was at this bar - The Perfect Pint we ran into 2 other girls we graduated high school from. What are the odds out of how many Irish bars in NYC for the 3 of us to run into 2 other girls from HS. We chatted for a few minutes and then escaped to another table - I haven't seen these girls in 10 years since we graduated.
Meg & Suz. I've known them both since 2nd grade and Suz was the first person I met when we moved to Green.
Meg was reserved - I was broken... Our table had a broken sign on it and we thought it was funny.
Suz, Meg and I
So after we enjoyed a few pints and catching up around 9 we decided to head home. As the 3 of them had to work the next morning and well I was exhausted after the conference. But on the way home for stopped for a real Irish treat - a Shamrock Shake! It was delish! Suz and I just hung out chatting and finding a new gem of a show to watch. Myrtle Mannor on TLC. It is a "reality" show shot last summer at a trailer park in Myrtle Beach, SC. Absolutely hilarious!

So Monday morning I was off exploring the city. So my goal of the day was to visit some National Park Sites. There are a ton in NYC but a lot of them are closed on Mondays... Boo! But I did go to General Grant's Tomb up in Riverside Park! It was cold and gross out - but still fun. I did have a few NYC firsts - rode the bus system, lost my metro card I had just put money on and saw it snow and went all over Manhattan from
125th to the Lower East Side. I also wanted to try to go to St. Paul's Church but it was up so far north - aka out of the city and I got a late start due to work taking longer in the morning than I expected. But I also did head to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum which I had been to before in 2009 with students and they are affiliated with the NPS system but not an official but they do have a park stamp. So I got it and walked around the area and while in the bookshop at the museum got all excited looking at the different books on Irish and Immigration History. I miss studying it so much!
Grant's Tomb - I took better pictures on my real camera but don't have the cord and my work computer doesn't have the memory card slot.
Julia Grant and Ulysses Grant's tombs and the awesome mural of Lee & Grant at Appomattox
And then after my adventures of going all over Manhattan I went and got a much deserved mani/pedi and then I met up with Suz for a great dinner and it was snowing like crazy and sticking! Here was a view from dinner - we went to this cute pub type place and with the candles and snow falling it looked so quaint in the middle of NYC!

So Tuesday was my fun travel day. To go from NYC to Albany I had a layover in Dulles. So for 2 sunny hours I was back home in Virginia while I went from snowy NYC to an even snowier Albany where it was snowing when I landed yesterday evening. Love the crazy of a travel day - luckily no delays!

And now it is time to kick off another conference!

27!

so last year when i celebrated 26 i was on the edge of moving to charleston and excited about the possibility of everything that was changing in my life. i was excited about starting over in a new city, looking for non-teaching jobs and just ready for a change but so excited about the possibility of everything! and well a year later i feel like i'm back to square one trying to figure everything out - what do i want to do? where do i want to live? and i feel much less sure about everything than i did a year ago.

so 26 was definitely an interesting year. one of challenges and sometimes backtracking but i took a risk and made a major life change by moving to charleston and i'm still trying to figure it all out. but in all the crazy there was some awesome.

so in the last year i have finished out my summer in dc and all the crazy that goes along with conferences, went to a bunch of country concerts, packed up my life and moved to charleston, explored and had fun adventures in charleston, read a lot of books when i was unemployed, had some fun in pittsburgh with conferences, broke myself playing kickball and tore my acl, went back to nj for surgery for a bit longer than anticipated but was able to see friends a lot more, traveled all over for spring conferences, subbed for a month, went to chicago! finally moved back to charleston in march, visited annie in colorado, continued to travel like crazy with conferences, went camping in the rockies, went to wyoming for the day, traveled for 7 weeks, was a bridesmaid for one of my best friends and now i'm ending the year working one of my favorite conferences in dc.

so i'm not where i thought i'd be right now and not really sure where i'm going with everything. but hey it will all work out - or so i keep telling myself.

so taking a look at the 2012 goals -

find a full time job where i am happy (preferably teaching) - currently working on finding a full time job - any assistance would be greatly appreciated
-continue traveling - yup! made it to chicago & atlanta as 2 new cities and added 2 states - colorado & wyoming and had 40 flights since jan 1st
- read 100 books - i just finished book 96 of the year yesterday

-write more letters & cards to friends - i've been pretty good about mailing birthday cards to friends, want to write more notes just because
- get my strength back in my knee and run a half marathon this fall - strength is getting back, currently running about 2 miles. still a possibility to run a half
- get my savings up to $5,000 -  this is directly related to the need a full time job
- get my first two years of college scrapbook finished -  i've done a few pages, need to work on
- continue doing my photo365 - i'm still taking photos and labeling them, haven't uploaded any to 365 blog since january
- cross 5 things off my 30 by 30 list - crossed off 2 new things

-create 3 things off my pinterest list - made 2 new recipes
- blog more (100 posts) - ummm again slacking i'm only at 40 for the year
- continue looking for the best in every situation - doing the best i can i feel like there have been a lot of disappointments this year
- enjoy life and have fun! -

so here is to a great 27 and hoping for some good news! i'm not really celebrating my birthday too much as i'm in the middle of a conference session in dc with 270 hs students and but i am excited to go to my favorite monuments and memorials so at least that is something fun!

5 years

five years ago today i was celebrating my college graduation and walking across the stage collecting my diploma from washington college. saying goodbye to some amazing friends and reminiscing about an absolutely amazing four years and while knowing i can always go back to visit chestertown it would never be the same. and my life in the last five years while not exactly as i planned has been nothing short of amazing. i've grown so much since crossing the stage and had some crazy adventures.

so in the last five years since i graduated from college i have:

- spent an amazing summer living in asheville, north carolina teaching at an academic summer camp
- lived in ireland for two years
- graduated with honors with a masters in history
- travelled all around europe while living in ireland
- moved back to the states and spent a hilarious spring in mystic, connecticut
- started working conferences for high school students in washington, dc in summer 2009
- moved back to new jersey and had an incredible first year teaching social studies and coaching
- spent a summer back in connecticut sailing
- been unemployed
- ran my first half marathon
- been a nomad between nj, dc and all over working conferences for middle & high school students
- took off for a 3 week european adventure
- spent a summer living in nova, running conferences for 330 high school students
- moved to charleston, south carolina pretty much for an adventure
- tore my ACL and spent a few months in new jersey
- enjoying living in charleston and just trying to figure out my next step
- travelled to 15 states and 11 countries
- lived in 5 states
- made so many friends and have been so lucky to experience so many great places and adventures

it is kinda crazy how much i've been able to do and see, while my plan wasn't this unstructured i've had fun and i've gotten to travel and experience life which i know when i get the chance again i'll be an amazing teacher because of it

while my next step is still unsure i know i'll be ok. life is one big adventure and i'm just doing my best to live it and take advantage of every opportunity i've been given!

only a few days late... 2012 goals

welcome to 2012.

i'm only a few days late - oops!

just haven't felt like writing, the internet has been super annoying and well i don't do much besides physical therapy right now so i'm all kinds of boring.

check out that sexy knee brace!
but i am quite happy with the fact that is is january and it is 50 outside in jersey. but earlier this week is was in the teens for the high so please continue with this nice weather while i am in jersey.
so the knee is doing well. pt is going great and i'm getting my strength back in my knee. i'll be able to head back to charleston in the next two weeks - just need to get a few things sorted with insurance, get a smaller knee brace and set up pt down there. i am very excited about going back soon. i'm kinda going crazy sleeping on the couch and not doing much. i am also able to drive as of today which helps! but the work front is going to be interesting. with this type of surgery i have a easier but slower recovery - so it will be about 4-6 months before i'm 100% and allowed to play sports and the like (so i'm looking at june). my doctor doesn't want me working retail for another 2-3 months, but i am allowed to sub. so i've contacted a few people at my old conference job and hopefully i'll be working some conferences from feb - april, which will be great because i would get to travel, which i've really missed! and then i won't go crazy subbing.

other than that life in nj has been pretty quiet.

let's take a look at my 2011 goals and how they went:
- find a full time job where i am happy (preferably teaching) - nope. i've had a few jobs and i did love running conferences this summer , and was promoted to a leader in retail, but nothing full time and teaching
- move out and get my own place - yes! i moved to charleston in august with amy and love, love, love my apartment!
-continue traveling both in the US and internationally (i would LOVE to get out west again) - i rocked this goal in 2011. i had a three week euro trip in january to zurich, prague, budapest, veinna, cologne, amsterdam & ireland. and then i went to 6 new states - washington, indiana, illinois, mississippi, alabama & texas. plus all up & down the east coast!
- read 100 books - another goal i rocked! i read 131 books this year. (thanks traveling, unemployment & being broken) 77 were physical books and another 54 on my kindle.
- continue working out 3-4 times a week and run another half marathon - ehhhh. i wasn't working out 3-4 times a week like i wanted and i was training for a half in january but the breaking myself didn't help this.
- save an additional $12,000 this year - complete fail. i've pretty much depleted my savings this year due to traveling, moving, being unemployed and broken.
- scrapbook more - started it while in charleston, would like to have done more.
- continue doing my photo365 - yup! still going strong! i love doing this!
- cross 5 things off my 30 by 30 list - ehhh - i completed a few - living on my own, seeing my irish friends, going to a book reading. worked on a few - countries visited, states visited, figuring out genealogy,  reading president bios, scrapbooking
- blog more (125 posts) - nope. only blogged 85 times in 2011.
- a relationship - dated someone last spring and had a few dates since charleston but nothing more
- continue looking for the best in every situation - i've really tried with not getting a teaching job and being unemployed again, tearing my ACL and just trying to have fun and be thankful for everything i have.
- enjoy life and have fun! - ohhhh i've had fun in 2011! overall it was a great year and i did some amazing things.

so now that we are getting into mid january maybe it is time i write down my goals for 2012.

find a full time job where i am happy (preferably teaching)
-continue traveling
- read 100 books

-write more letters & cards to friends
- get my strength back in my knee and run a half marathon this fall
- get my savings up to $5,000
- get my first two years of college scrapbook finished
- continue doing my photo365
- cross 5 things off my 30 by 30 list

-create 3 things off my pinterest list
- blog more (100 posts)
- continue looking for the best in every situation
- enjoy life and have fun!

so while a little late in writing down my goals - i have no idea what 2012 has in store but i'm excited for it. i would love a little more stability with work but i'm going to have fun and just take each day as it comes and embrace it!

2011 in review

2011 was a really interesting year. i traveled a lot, lived in dc for a few months, moved 800 miles away from home on a whim and broke myself again. the first 11 months were pretty damn awesome,  but it was the last 1.5 months that were pretty rough. so overall 2011 was a great year with lots of adventures but not quite the stability i was looking for, especially the end of the year. but it has been a fun year and one that i'll remember as i was able to travel so much!

january

amsterdam

zurich
vienna
kicked off the new year in philly with jeanne, kaity & co and don't really remember anything as i was a hot drunk mess. but on january 3rd i hopped on a plane to zurich to start a 3 week adventure around europe. i had an amazing time traveling solo getting to go to some amazing places and just doing what i wanted as i frolicked around. spent about 36 hours in zurich, loving the churches and chocolate! spent many hours on trains as i went to prague next. loved loved loved prague and the history there, charles bridge, prague castle! saw the sedlec ostuary and the church decorated with human bones. wished i had more time in prague but off to budapest. it was foggy & wet in budapest but loved the cathedrals, castle, walking tour and turkish baths. next was vienna and i loved the elegance & history. spent a lot of time in palaces and went to a ballet at the vienna opera house! cologne, germany was where i spent most of my time in the one of the largest cathedrals in europe, eating chocolate and enjoying this adorable city. and then finally getting to go to amsterdam! the highlight was the anne frank house, but i loved the canals and bikes. had fun at the heineken brewery and museum and just enjoying the city! and then my last leg of the eurotrip going back home to cork! i spent 4 glorious days back in my little city along the lee, visiting friends, eating all my favorites, going to my pubs, going to my old office and just missing ireland like crazy. i was really sad to leave cork! but the adventures were just getting started when my eurotrip ended. i was in dc within 24 hours of landing starting up more conferences, but this time traveling around the US! and dc was great - catching up with old friends, meeting new great people and an epic snowstorm! and one of my best friends getting engaged!

very rough month for me. i really missed being in charleston, working and just living. i hated not working and then not having money, so didn't really do much. was able to see my nj zta sisters a few times and did help twin go wedding dress shopping twice though! little car accident - oops! and did go to philly to see jeanne and help her with some wedding plus saw phil vassar & craig morgan with her too. went to see lady a with my sister and also into nyc for the day to see the city at my favorite time of year. acl surgery on the 19th and all the fun that came with that. christmas with the family and seeing friends and quietly ringing in 2012.

i'm hoping for 2012 to start off better than 2011 ended. 2011 was an interesting year where i was able to go to 6 new states and 5 new countries, make some great new friends, run conferences for hs students, work retail, go to 12 concerts, moved into my own apartment in charleston, lived in dc, had all sorts of adventures, was able to see so many of my friends, tore my other ACL and overall had a blast! who knows what is in store for 2012??
